Every year, on November 25th, TP joins global efforts to raise awareness on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Through initiatives like TP Women, we are committed to fostering a safer world by encouraging open dialogue about the challenges women face. This day serves as a significant reminder of the ongoing struggle against violence directed toward women and girls, a violation of their human rights that impacts countless lives worldwide.
Violence against women, particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence, is not just a private issue. It is a significant public health problem that affects millions of women and girls around the world. According to estimates published by the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 3 women globally, about 30%, have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Most of this violence is intimate partner violence. In fact, nearly 27% of women aged 15-49 who have been in a relationship report experiencing some form of physical and/or sexual violence from their intimate partners. These experiences not only inflict immediate harm but can also lead to long-term physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health issues.
How Prevention and Support Can Make a Difference
While the statistics are alarming, it is essential to remember that violence against women is preventable. The health sector plays a critical role in addressing this issue by providing comprehensive health care services to women who have been subjected to violence. Health professionals can serve as a vital entry point for these women, offering not only medical care but also referrals to other support services they may need. This holistic approach is crucial for recovery and empowerment.
In response to the challenges of gender-based violence in Brazil, TP is committed to fostering economic independence for survivors in Brazil. Through a recent initiative in partnership with local NGOs in the country, TP is prioritizing remote job opportunities specifically for women who have experienced violence, offering them a path to financial stability and a supportive community.
In the Philippines, TP is reinforcing protections for women and children by hosting educational forums on the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) Law. The forum clarified employee rights and highlighted TP’s commitment to a safe, respectful workplace. Through initiatives like these and strong policies such as the Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy and Code of Conduct, TP in the Philippines empowers employees to foster a culture of security and inclusivity.
