The world, working styles, and people’s mindsets have all evolved significantly over the past few years. As women, we feel increasingly welcomed in today's corporate sector. From Mars missions to interior design, no field remains untouched by our presence. We are piloting fighter jets, voicing our opinions, and driving the essential transformations needed to create a brighter future.
It's often said that "Change is a process, not an event," and this holds true as we see continuous efforts from all genders to bring women to the forefront of the cloud industry. While we still have some way to go for equal representation, progress is evident. According to Nasscom, women currently hold about 26.7% of tech-related jobs globally. Though these numbers are not massive yet, we anticipate a significant rise in the coming years.
In this blog, we'll explore how women are breaking barriers and driving innovation in the cloud industry. Historically dominated by male professionals, the cloud sector is now undergoing significant transformation thanks to the growing influence of women. Their contributions are reshaping the landscape and paving the way for a more inclusive future in tech.
Five ways women are leading innovation in cloud
Bridging gender gap in a more sustainable fashion
Various organizations have implemented initiatives to support and mentor women in tech, such as hackathons, which have inspired women globally to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Additionally, the skill shortage in these fields has prompted industries to actively include more women, addressing this issue comprehensively. This effort is reflected in the increased share of women CEOs, rising from 7.4% in 2020 to 10.6% in 2023.
Bringing fresh and diverse perspectives
Diversity within a team undeniably leads to a greater range of ideas, problem-solving approaches, and enhanced creativity. A variety of perspectives helps organizations design more innovative and well-equipped products that cater to a broader user base. Additionally, women often excel at reading non-verbal cues, a skill crucial for addressing complex challenges and developing inclusive technologies. Embracing diversity not only enriches the team's dynamic but also drives meaningful and impactful innovation.
Role models and mentorship
The presence of successful women in the tech industry greatly inspires the next generation. These trailblazers serve as role models and actively mentor aspiring women in tech through networking events. Currently, women make up 14% of the global workforce in cloud computing, demonstrating how they effectively leverage their strengths in collaboration, communication, and empathy to drive change and create value.
Innovation in product design
Be it a health and wellness app or rise in artificial intelligence (AI) women are contributing more than we can think in catering to different user needs. A well-integrated feminine perspective improves the accessibility and usability of technical products and solutions for a broader userbase. As per Forbes, “Women designers and entrepreneurs have an innate ability to understand the pain points and aspirations of female consumers and thus drive new types of innovation, disruption, and brand loyalty.”1
Leadership and entrepreneurship
According to global estimates, women make 85% of consumer spending decisions—a powerful testament to the potential female presence brings to any team. Women have founded various successful startups, from Nykaa to Canva to Yatra, demonstrating their entrepreneurial prowess. As the saying goes, "Every woman, by virtue of her lived experience, is now a walking hub of multi-million-dollar business ideas." Women leaders are challenging traditional norms and paving the way for future generations. The number of women entering the tech industry is steadily rising, enriching it with their unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and diverse skill sets. Now, it’s our collective responsibility to continue fostering an inclusive environment that supports and empowers women in tech.
Reshaping the landscape of cloud computing
The narrative surrounding women in the cloud industry is rapidly evolving. While there is still progress to be made, the strides achieved by women in technology are undeniable. By bridging the gender gap and bringing fresh perspectives, women are driving innovation and reshaping the landscape of cloud computing. With the rise of role models, mentorship opportunities, and an increasing number of women-led startups, the future for women in tech looks promising. It is crucial that we continue to foster inclusive environments that support and empower women in their pursuit of excellence in the cloud industry. By embracing diversity and harnessing the full potential of female talent, we pave the way for a more innovative and inclusive tech ecosystem.
