Future Skillsets for Employees to Learn Today

Teleperformance - 02.11.2021

Workplaces have continuously embraced the many benefits of modern technology, paving the way for employees to evolve, learn, and adapt over time. Recent technological advancements have relentlessly shaped the modern workplace: the Internet has revolutionized the way we connect and communicate, the growing use of data and analytics resulting in effective marketing solutions and better customer experience, machine learning and AI aiding humans to simplify workplace operations, and the rapid rise of remote work due to a global pandemic.

The future of work is upon us after a massive disruption challenged organizations to rethink, change, or reassess their business models in order to address the many changes brought by the pandemic. As companies face the tedious task of emerging from a crisis, employees should recognize the need to learn new skills that would be in high demand in a post-COVID-19 workplace environment.

According to World Economic Forum (WEF), 50% of all employees will need reskilling by 2025 as the value of technology rises. The digital transformation is propelling employees to learn new skills to adapt with the latest technologies and digital trends affecting the workplace—LinkedIn’s 2020 Learning Report stated that the fast pace of technology prompted 51% of L&D pros to plan launching upskilling programs, while 43% plan on launching reskilling programs to help leaders and employees prepare for the future.

What are the future skillsets needed to thrive in tomorrow’s workplace? Analytical Thinking/Innovation is the first on WEF’s “Top 10 Skills of 2025,” followed by Active Learning, Complex Problem Solving, Creativity, and Leadership. WEF also noted the inclusion of self-management skills such as active learning, resilience, flexibility, and stress management as the pandemic limited employees from working in physical workspaces, as well as create an impact on their emotional well-being.

While soft skills remain constantly high on every company’s list, the ability of an employee to use tech tools and operate in a highly digital environment has become in demand. Today, being “tech-savvy” doesn’t only mean mastery in navigating the Internet or Google searches, we’re talking about a basic understanding and application of data concepts, machine learning, automation, analytics, and AI. As companies aim to deliver more personalized customer experiences, the need for employees who can effectively work using these technologies will definitely increase. One thing to think about: after a year of uncertainty and disruption, AI, big data, and automation have greatly assisted companies in their business continuity and resiliency plans--truly, employees who possess these skills will be beneficial for every company.

Finally, employees who have emotional intelligence will always be valued. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and positively manage our emotions as well as others’, allowing us to communicate effectively, overcome stress, make decisions, or understand the needs of the people around us. Having high emotional intelligence can be directly linked to great leadership and can lead to better relationships with colleagues and teams.

The success of every business depends on their greatest asset—its people. Make sure to empower yourself by making learning a priority, and ensure you are equipped to thrive in the workplace of the future.
